Trabzon Sumela Monastery Tour
Your guide meets you in your hotel lobby and you drive to Sumela Monastery. Built on the cliffs of Altindere National Park, the monastery dates back to the 4th century and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
You explore its remarkable frescoes, monks' rooms and breathtaking mountain views, and learn about its spiritual and historical importance through the Byzantine and Ottoman periods.
After the monastery you continue through the Zigana Pass, home to the longest road tunnel in Turkey and one of the longest in Europe.
The drive offers spectacular views of highlands, dense forests and misty peaks. Coming down from the pass you reach Hamsikoy, a charming village famous for its traditional rice pudding (sutlac).
You can taste this local speciality and experience authentic Black Sea village life in peaceful surroundings.
The next stop is the fascinating Karaca Cave near Torul in Gumushane province, known for its impressive stalactites, stalagmites and colourful limestone formations.
At the end of the tour you drive back to your hotel in Trabzon.
