Your guide meets you in your hotel lobby, and you set off on the 2-hour drive to Iznik (Nicaea), a historic capital for many civilisations from Bithynia to the Byzantine and Ottoman empires.
You begin with the city walls and gates of Iznik, built in antiquity and strengthened over the centuries to protect the ancient city.
Next is the Iznik Archaeology Museum, with finds spanning 8,500 years, from the Neolithic period to Ottoman times.
You then explore the ruins of the Roman Theatre of Nicaea, used for gladiator fights and public performances for more than two centuries.
Afterwards you enjoy a relaxed lunch on the scenic shore of Lake Iznik.
The tour ends at the famous Hagia Sophia of Nicaea, one of the three historic Hagia Sophias in Turkey along with those in Istanbul and Trabzon. It hosted the Second Council of Nicaea in 787 AD. First a Byzantine church and later a mosque, it reflects the city's rich spiritual heritage.
At the end of the tour you drive back to Istanbul and are taken to your hotel.
