Ephesus is the best-preserved classical city on the Mediterranean, and perhaps the best place in the world to imagine daily life in Roman times. You walk its remarkable marble streets, lined with columns, temples and fountains, and see sites such as the Temple of Hadrian, the magnificent facade of the Library of Celsus and the Great Theater. Just beyond Ephesus lies the House of the Virgin Mary. According to Christian tradition, the Apostle John brought Mary here after the Resurrection and she spent her final days in this house. A small shrine to Mary was found when the ruins were first discovered, and the Vatican has since recognised the site.

You also visit Isa Bey Mosque, built in the 14th century by the first Muslim dynasty to settle in western Anatolia, and learn about early Islamic architecture.

You can also visit the Terrace Houses, whose well-preserved mosaics and frescoes show how the wealthy families of Ephesus lived.
